Dr Giuseppe Maglione
Dr Giuseppe Maglione is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Kent and founding Director of the University’s Restorative Justice Clinic. He holds a PhD in Legal Theory from the University of Florence and has a professional background in law, restorative justice and mediation. Before entering academia, he worked as a legal adviser in prisons and as a victim-offender and community mediator in Italy and Norway.
Dr Maglione has held visiting research positions at the University of Cambridge, Durham University, KU Leuven, the University of Oslo, the International Institute for the Sociology of Law and the Max Planck Institute in Freiburg. In 2026, he was a resident researcher at the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris.
He is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and an external professor on the PhD in Peace Studies at Sapienza University of Rome. He also trains public, educational and third-sector organisations in restorative justice and conflict transformation.
Dr Maglione’s research focuses on restorative justice and conflict transformation, with particular attention to the relationship between justice practices, power and political order. His work examines restorative justice from theoretical, policy and practice perspectives, including its institutionalisation, relationship with criminal justice, and role in responding to structural harm and conflict.
His research has contributed to restorative justice policy debates internationally and has been cited in policy and government publications in Scotland, Queensland (Australia), Catalonia (Spain) and the Netherlands. His work also informs practice through engagement with public bodies and restorative justice organisations.
Currently, he is particularly interested in how restorative and conflict-transformation practices operate in everyday organisational and community settings, and how small-scale interventions can address harm, conflict and power relations.Current and recent projects
